How do you install the drivers? Are you running off of a Windows XP CD or are you installing the drivers through Device Manager? If you are installing the drivers through Device Manager, it should not be an issue unless you are running off of a Windows XP Live CD. Otherwise, the answer depends.
There are two parts to the problem:
Can the ThinkPad BIOS boot off of the external hard drive? If so, the bios should see the drive as the root partition. You can use the diskpart tool to view the disk layout.
Can the Linux kernel see the file system on the external hard drive?
I am assuming that you are installing the ThinkPad driver from within Linux. If so, then you should be able to see the external hard drive in your /dev directory.
You could use the mount command to mount the external hard drive to /mnt/flash and then cd to that directory.
If you don't have an external hard drive, you could mount your flash drive, use diskpart to look at the disk layout and then use the UUID and Device Partition to determine what device to mount.

The RNR enzymes are commonly divided into two classes based on structural and functional differences.
